Yesterday, HEAT hosted our first meeting in the garden of the 2011-2012 school year! We had a great turn out of about a dozen students! We harvested the rest of the eggplant, nasturtium flowers, and hot purple peppers! We collected a HUGE bag of eggplant that we brought to the kitchen, and hopefully students will be enjoying it very soon! The nasturtium flowers are 100% edible, so look for them in the salad bar! The hot peppers are going to be strung this week, so those will not make their way into the dining hall right away, but I can promise you, you will know when they do! A few daring gardeners popped one in their mouths not sure of their heat tolerance level. In the end it took a lot of water, milk, salsa, and pain to get through it!
So if you were looking to go down to the garden in the upcoming week, there isn't anything that is ready to harvest other than a few nasturtium flowers. The beets, carrots, and the single pumpkin (the rest were eaten!) will be ready to harvest in a few weeks.
HEAT will be meeting in the upcoming weeks to plant some garlic and get ready for this upcoming year!
Hope to see you at a meeting soon!
